They’re clearly having a lot of fun on this album, and the lively production keeps things upbeat without getting cheesy and clownish. The Cactus Al/Bum (also known as The Cactus Cee/D and The Cactus Cas/Ette depending on release format) is the debut album by hip hop trio 3rd Bass, released on Def Jam Recordings on November 14, 1989. 3rd Bass's initial novelty was their pale skin color, but he Cactus Album showed that the only crutch Serch and Prime Minister Pete Nice relied on was the one propping up Nice's bum leg. Sure, they picked on easy targets like MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice, but they goofed around and mixed in some more serious tales from the street (despite not necessarily being from there). Yeah, man, we’re hard! These guys didn’t go that route.

Where many white rappers failed was in their being too earnest (or too goofy). Do we remember these guys because they were good, or because they were white? I think the answer is a little bit of both.
